Jim Ockuly

I create things in series — both paintings and what I call printed photo/graphics. There are typically ten to twenty pieces per group. I show them on the wall, and like to think of them as projected movies, in a way, with each series having its own concept and aesthetic. In my forty-plus years of art making, I've explored themes involving image-language relationships; ways of reading and representing the world; facing mortality and attempting immortality; and how evolving technology produces both progression and digression — all in the service of understanding human experience, and with a sense of wonder and humor about who, where, and when we find ourselves to be. While I have worked in almost every medium, including film, video, and computer-based virtual worlds, I have made my way back to producing small, simple paintings and graphic images.
